Senior Softball: DaVinci's only undefeated team at 6-0

With a quarter of the 2019 season already completed, DaVinci's is the only team with a perfect record and has a three lead in the Island Division. Mutual of Omaha Bank has a one game over Joey's Pizza and Mango's in the Marco Division, with the American Legion Post is in first place in the Gulf Coast Division by one game over Doreen's.

The games remain very competitive with four games determined by one run. The highlight game of the week was Mutual of Omaha Bank scoring of fourteen runs to overcome a 6-16 deficit in their last at bat for the win. MARCO DIVISION

Mango’s, 14; Snook Inn, 8

Bruce Winer and Warren Uhl had three hits too pace Mango’s with Glen Davis contributing a triple. Davis, Tom Parker and Jeff Dougherty had three RBI and John Robichaud two. The Snook Inn had Jim Battye cracking a triple with Steve Chasin and Mike Arnold driving in two runs.

Stonewalls, 8; Mutual of Omaha Bank, 7                                

Stonewalls pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the seventh inning overcoming a 7-1 deficit and handing the Bank its first loss of the season. Lou Wolfenson and Dave Coward lined three hits for Stonewalls with Geoff Bentley and Tom Grucci having two RBI. The Bank had Rob Mann drill four hits with Tom Purtell and Ray Niemeyer crushing a triple. Niemeyer had three RBI. Baumann had three RBI;

Joey’s Pizza, 24; Crazy Flamingo’s, 7

The Pizza Boys plucked the Flamingo’s feathers scoring twelve runs in the top of seventh leading to Flamingo’s conceding the game. Ralph Rohena torched Flaming pitching for six hits and six RBI with one being a homerun. Teammates John Sherwin had four and Jim Baumann three. Besides Rohena’s homer, Pat Comerford and Dave Coward each launched a homerun with Baumann having a triple. Baumann had three RBI; Coward, Sherwin, Joe Barry, Nick Brooks, and Jim O’Meara two. Joey’s pitcher Joe Furst only allowed Flamingo’s seven hits.

Joey’s Pizza, 14; Stonewalls, 7

Jim Baumann and Nick Brooks had three hits for Joey’s with Tom McCullough smacking a homerun. Baumann chased in three runs; Brooks, McCullough and Pat Comerford had two. Stonewalls had Dave Droddy with three hits while Pat Shannon hammered a homerun. Shannon recorded four RBI, Lou Wolfenson two.

Mango’s, 19; Crazy Flamingo’s, 10

Mango’s had Paul Sullivan, Glen Davis and Todd Whitney with three hits; one of Sullivan’s being a triple. Tom Parker drove in four runs, John Robichaud three runs and Warren Uhl two in the win. Mario Lucca and Joe Cervelli teed up the ball getting four hits each with Cervelli picking up two RBI for Crazy Flamingo’s.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 20; Snook Inn, 18  

It only happens in Senior Softball; trailing 6 -16 going into the last inning the Bank closed out the Snook Inn’s account with a fourteen run final inning to win the game. Rob Mann nailed four hits, Tom Purtell and Steve Friend three for the Bank. Mann and Ray Niemeyer clouted a homerun with Mann having four RBI, Friend and Tom Loiacono three, Niemeyer and Purtell two.  John Barrett placed four hits, John Cavanagh and Fred Pendergrass had three for the Snook Inn. Pendergrass launched two homeruns and Randy Wesolowski one. Pendergrass plated five runs, Barrett four, Cavanagh three and Brian Maguire two.     

GULF COAST DIVISION

American Legion, 26; Moose Lodge, 21                                                  

There were a combine total of 64 hits in the game, thirty-three by the American Legion and thirty-one by the Moose Lodge. Charles Pineno and Denny Lello tagged four hits for the Legion, while Dick DeAnna and Butch Monson had three, one Monson being a homerun. DeAnna drove in five runs, Monson and Paul Burnett three; Lello, Leon Schmitt and Tony Brock two. Jerry Lenhoff  and Rick Condle nailed four hits for the Moose, while Jerry Kratz, Dom Fiorda, Don Mandetta, Dan O’Sullivan, and Jim Adams had three, with Kratz and John Gill having a triple and Condle a homerun. Mandetta had four RBI, Gill three; Condle, Adams, Frank Flint and Leroy Fishleigh two.

American Legion, 20; Doreen’s, 9

Dick DeAnna and Paul Burnett each drilled four hits for the American Legion while Leon Schmitt and Charles Pineno had three. Burnett walloped two homeruns giving him nine RBI in the game, Al Bozzo had three; Tony Brock and Jim Conway two. Rick Condle and Jerry Lenhoff had three hits for Doreen’s; one of Lenhoff’s a homerun giving him four RBI.                                                                                                             

ISLAND DIVISION

DaVinci’s, 17; Nacho Mama’s, 10

Gary Revall riveted four hits, Phil Holmes and Dave Schott had three hits with Holmes and Nick Jacullo each cracking a triple. Dan Gulick had three RBI; Jacullo, Holmes, Chris Flynn, and Dan Harrar two.  George Grygorcewicz had three hits for Nacho’s, one being a triple. Grygorcewicz, John Haskins and Bill Shurina had two runs driven in.

Sand Bar, 16; Speakeasy, 1

Sand Bar ended up a mercy win over Speakeasy at the end of eight innings for their first win of the season. Lou Marinaccio ripped four hits for Sand Bar, one a triple; Wayne Bombaci, Jim Kornas and Grady Fuller had three hits. Marinaccio had four RBI; Bombaci, Kornas, Fuller and Dan Marinelli two. Jack O’Brien limited speakeasy to eight hits in his once win of the season.

Brewery, 25; Salty Dog, 16

Trailing 10-1 at the end of three innings the Brewery out scored the Salty Dog 24-6 over the last six innings. The Brewery slugged four homeruns Rick Krumholz, Herman Griffith, and Bob Williams each had three run homers with Jim Williams having a two run shot.  Griffith unleashed five hits, Bob Williams and Jim Vitas four; Jim Stewart and Dan Dumbauld three. Griffith was credited with five RBI, Jim Williams four; Bob Williams and Krumholz three while Jim Stewart and John Gross had two. Paul Shelton lined four hits for the Salty, Tom Polston and Jim Ramage had three. Ramage had a grand slam homerun and John Rysak a triple. Besides Ramage’s four RBI, Shelton had three; Polston, Rysak, Bill Thompson and Ed Caster had two.

DaVinci’s, 31; Salty Dog, 27

DaVinci’s just keeps rolling along nipping the Salty Dog to stay unbeaten. Craig Cunningham, Dan Gulick and Don O’Connell stung the ball for four hits for DaVinci’s with Phil Holmes having three. O’Connell clouted a homerun and had six RBI, Gary Revall and Art Sinisi mashed a triple with Revall and having five RBI along with Nick Jacullo, Holmes and Chuck Reich three RBI; Gulick, Chris Flynn, and Dan Harrar two. The Salty Dog had Mike Schwab, Tom Polston, Bill Thompson and Bill Novakovich pepper four hits while Bill Wright and Jim Ramage had three. Polson and Ramage clocked a homerun while Polston also had a triple.  Schwab accumulated six RBI, Thompson five; Polston, Jack Martin and Pete Oellrich had two RBI.

Sand Bar, 23; Nacho Mama’s, 5

In consecutive games Sand Bar ended the game due to the mercy rule. Gary Grefer and Dan Marinelli scorched the ball for five hits; and Wayne Bombaci four. Bombaci had a homerun and Marinelli a triple. Bombaci racked up six RBI, Marinelli and Bob Traver four, Grefer three and Dave Roeske two.  Nacho’s who  lost their fourth game in a row was led by George Grygorcewicz who nailed four hits and Tom Tankersley who had three with Grygorcewicz driving in two runs

Speakeasy, 14; Brewery, 13

Frank Tedesco and Ray Kane had three hits apiece for Speakeasy with one of Tedesco’s a triple. Tedesco chased in four runs Dean Stone three. Joe Rocco and Jimmy Cuevas had three hits for the Brewery with Rocco walloping a homerun as part of his three hits.  Rocco and Jim Vitas had three RBI, Rich Krumholz and Herman Griffith two.

Brewery, 10; Sand Bar, 9              

In an overall team effort the Brewery was able to edge the San Bar for the win with John Gross having smacked a triple in the game. Sand Bar had Gary Grefer with three hits with Wayne Bombaci thumping a triple giving him and Grefer two RBI.

Nacho Mama’s, 21; Salty Dog, 20

The game was tied going into the ninth innings when Salty Dog scored fours runs to take a 20-16 lead, only to see Nacho’s stormed back to score five runs with Bill Shurina driving in Jeff Kaczka for the winning run.  Kaczka and Mike Garofalo tagged four hits for Nacho’s with Steve Hummel, John Haskins, John Remhoff, Mike Puskar and Tom Tankersley having three. George Grygorcewicz crushed a triple and had four RBI; Hummel, Garofalo, and Tankersley three; Haskins and Engel two. Bill Wright ripped the ball for five hits with Tom Polston, Bill Thompson, John Ramage, Tom Gazzillo, and Paul Shelton gathering three for the Salty Dog. Thompson, who smashed a triple, drove in five runs. Ramage had three RBI; Poston, Gazzillo, Pete Oellrich and Bill Novakovich two. The win ended Nacho’s four game losing streak.

DaVinci’s, 22; Speakeasy, 19 

DaVinci’s jumped out to an 20-13 advantage and was able to hold off a late game rally by Speakeasy to stay undefeated. Chris Flynn, Gary Revall, Dan Gulick, Don O’Connell and Art Sinisi all had here hits for DaVinci’s, with Sinisi cracking a triple. Dan Harrar and Jack Tizio chased in four, Sinisi three, Gulick, Revall and Craig Cunningham two. Ray Kane continued swing a hot bat for Speakeasy having four hits; Rod Lashley, Joe, Lazzarotti, Frank Tedesco, Dean Stone and Jim Gilligan had three. Lashley, Tedesco and Stone each pounded a triple. Stone and Gilligan each drove home four runs, Tedesco three and Tom Angelo two.
