Second child trapped in submerged vehicle in Cape Coral canal dies

A second child in a car that drove into a canal late Wednesday night has died, according to Cape Coral police.

Police had responded to a traffic crash in the 3100 block of NE 5th Place just before midnight that involved a vehicle driving into a canal with two adults and two children inside the vehicle, according to a police department news release.

On scene they found a 2014 Ford Focus submerged in the canal and two children trapped in the car.

Two adults involved in the crash, Julia Ann Drudy and Kenneth Wayne Lawson, both of Cape Coral, suffered minor injuries. Police did not identify who was driving.

The car was headed east on 31st Street approaching the Fifth Place intersection when the driver left the roadway and struck the elevated canal bank, which caused the vehicle to go airborne and into the canal, the release states. 

Two children were trapped in the car, according to the release.

One child died at a local hospital and the second child was taken to Golisano Children's Hospital in Fort Myers where he later succumbed to his injuries from the crash, according to the release. Their identities were not released.

The crash is still under investigation.
